COMICS A GO-GO

So, people have lately been asking me to recommend some good comic book reading. So in this post I'm going to talk about a few wonderful graphic novels, and some ongoing series that are in print right now.

Craig Thompson:

Okay, anyone and everyone I know needs to read Blankets. It's probably the best graphic novel written in the last ten years. It's that good. I don't make statements like that lightly. It's a story of growing up in a small town, about what faith really means, and most importantly, about first love. And I don't mean that whole, hey I've got a crush on this girl in my high school love. I mean that very real, it hurts to be away kind of love. The artwork is beautiful, as delicate as the snow that sets the backdrop of the story. This book is a blanket in its own way, but I don't want to dwell on that too much. But I do think if you're a friend of mine, then you should read it. Check out his site too.

Brian Wood:

One of the best designers and writers in the comic medium. He wrote this absolutely brilliant comic Channel Zero, about government control of media, of wars within countries, and of what it means to lose and fight for personal freedoms. It's about wars over oil and natural resources, of youth becoming disillusioned with the government and fighting back when and where they can. Sound familiar? Oh, and it was written in 1997, just so that you know. It's a very spooky book when you think about how much shit has gone down in the states since it was originally published. I can totally see it as one of those books that might someday find its way on to a banned book list in a US library.

He's also written one of the most amazing series of comics in the independent scene in the last few years, DEMO. Each issue is a seperate short story about a young person who has powers of some kind, or maybe not. It's more like a window, each issue is a glimpse into the life of that particular person. Each person is at a point in their life where they must make a life-altering decision. Absolutely brilliant.

He's also writing two other series I'm actively reading. Local, which is about a young woman, kind of like DEMO, short stories I mean, but it's only on issue 1, so I don't know what else to say. And DMZ, a story about a civil war in America, again relating to media manipulation. Also only on issue 1, so stay tuned for more.

I should also point out that Mr. Wood is a designer who has done work on lots of very cool video games, like GTA Vice City. You can check out his site here .

I'm pretty tired of writing. So I'm going to stop. More on comics later. Till then loyal reader.
